Professor Sheau-yueh Janey Chao is a librarian and Head of Cataloging at Baruch College, the City University of New York. She is a prominent scholar in the fields of Asian Studies and Chinese Genealogies. She has published three books and more than 15 refereed articles in Chinese genealogies and other related disciplines. In recent years, she has presented papers and was an invited speaker in numerous conferences both national and international. These conferences include the "First Joint Conference of the Librarians of Color" in Dallas, Texas (2006), the "Northern Utah Family History Conference and Symposium" in Ogden, Utah (2006), First to Third "International Conference of Institutes and Libraries for Overseas Chinese Studies" in Ohio University (2000), Chinese University of Hong Kong (2003), and Singapore (2005), the "International Conference on Knowledge Navigation and Library Services" in Shanghai Library (2002), the "National Conference on Asian Pacific American Librarians", and "American Library Association’s Annual Conference" in San Francisco (2001). Her book, In Search of Your Asian Roots: Genealogical Research on Chinese Surnames was nominated for the best book award in the year 2000 by Cornell University, Association for Asian American Studies. Her recent research involves the writing of a comprehensive genealogical guide and index to Chinese surnames. The project is sponsored by a CUNY Research grant which allows her to travel and do extensive research at Shanghai Library’s Genealogical Research Center. She is planning to take a sabbatical leave in Fall of this year to complete the writing of this guide.
