Call for Application – The CALA Jing Liao Award for the Best Research 2017

The CALA Jing Liao Award for the Best Research Committee (2016-2017) now invites the CALA members to submit their research works published between January 1, 2016 and December 31, 2016 for the competition of the CALA Jing Liao Award for the Best Research 2017.

The career of Jing Liao (1954-2011), a long-time CALA member and a devoted and accomplished librarian at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign was a perfect example of the pursuit of excellence in research and service. Honoring the memory of Jing Liao, the establishment of this memorial fund encourages CALA members to engage in excellence in research relating to information science and library related fields.

CALA members in good standing for three consecutive years are eligible to apply for the award, which consisted of $500 cash award and $500 supplemental travel fund contributed by the following three companies. The travel fund is to be used for the winner to travel to receive the award at 2017 ALA/CALA Annual Conference in June in Chicago, Illinois.

The CALA Jing Liao Award for the Best Research Committee is charged with task of calling for applications and selecting a work that best presented and reflected of the kind. Approved by the CALA Board of Executive Committee during its winter meeting in Atlanta, GA on January 21, 2017, the CALA Jing Liao Award for the Best Research Committee (2016 – 2017) will use a new modified Guidelines for Jing Liao Award Application and Selection to evaluate the research works submitted by the CALA members and will ensure a fair and transparent process.

CALA members who wish to apply for the Award should follow this new guideline for the competition:

1. Guidelines for Application:

  • An award in the amount of $500 will be granted annually to the author(s) of the winning publication; and additional $500 for the winner to travel to the Annual meeting to receipt the Award;
  • Applicants must be CALA members in good standing for three consecutive years, including the award year;
  • Applicants must demonstrate excellence in scholarly research by publishing works in any online and printed peer-reviewed publications, including books, book chapters, conference proceedings, e-journals, and Open Access journals, focusing in the fields of Library and Information Sciences. 
  • Applicants may submit one work, in either English or Chinese, published in the previous year for consideration;
  • Applicants must not be past recipients of the award.

2. Selection Criteria:

The following criteria will be used to evaluate and select the best research works received:

  • Scholarly Value: This criterion explores which research work has demonstrated specific creative ideas, new discoveries, deep influences, innovative approaches, etc. to promote the type of Library and Information Science research.
  • Research Focus: This criterion examines if the author’s ability, experience, knowledge, and skills of conducing specific research subjects.
  • Range and Scope of Research: This criterion measures the extent and the range of a researcher’s perceptions and thoughts in the research work.
  • Methodology: This criterion examines if the researcher utilizes an effective methodology to generate accountable and reliable conclusions, such as the connection between the population and the sample for various analysis and studies, etc.,
  • Discovery: This criterion explores if the submitted research work has any new discoveries or suggestions different from other previous research in the same research fields.
  • Influence: This criterion measures the potential implication or promotion for further studies in the related research fields.

3. Application:

For application, please submit the following materials to both LiLi Li (lilili@georgiasouthern.edu) and Jing Liu (jing.liu@ubc.ca):

  • A short cover letter including a statement of your CALA membership history and current status;
  • Full-text of your publication in a PDF format;
  • A complete citation of your publication in Chicago, APA, or MLA style, including its DOI link or URL if available;
  • A copy of your recent curriculum vitae in a PDF format.

4. Application Deadline: March 31, 2017 (Friday)

This is the deadline for the qualified CALA members to submit their research works for the CALA Jing Liao Award for the Best Research 2017.

5. Award Announcement Date: Before June 2, 2017 (Friday)

The award of the CALA Jing Liao Award for the Best Research 2017 will be announced before June 2, 2017 (Friday).
