Sally C. Tseng Professional Development Grant
2004 Recipients

(June 1, 2004)

Yunshan Ye and Lisa Zhao/Li Fu (joint application) are the recipients of the 2004 Sally C. Tseng Professional Development Grant!

The $1000 grant, donated by Sally C. Tseng, CALA Executive Director, provides support to CALA members in activities related to research in library and information science.

Yunshan Ye is a CALA member and currently works as the East Asian Project Librarian at Macalester College.  He is a Ph. D. candidate in comparative literature, with a specialization in Chinese literature and culture, from the University of Iowa.  He received a master's degree in library and information science and a master's degree in Comparative Literature from the University of Iowa, and a master’s degree in Education with a concentration in English from Calvin College, Michigan.  The grant will help Yunshan in his research endeavor to “explore practical and theoretical issues related to developing cooperative East Asian collections to optimize the use of existing library resources and advanced information technology,” which “will fill in the gap in the current literature on cooperative East Asian collection development, particularly for small college libraries.”  His research is original, well conceived, and will make a significant contribution to the profession in promoting East Asian collections in the United States.

Li Fu and Lisa Zhao are both from University of Illinois at Chicago where Li works as an Electronic Services Librarian & Assistant Professor and Lisa as an Assistant Catalog Librarian.  They are both CALA members and have been very active in the Midwest Chapter as well. Li also chairs the Midwest Chapter’s Archiving Committee while Lisa is the Midwest Chapter’s Treasurer/Webmaster. The grant will help them embark on an important project in building the very first archive database, which would “serve the dual purposes of preserving CALAMW Chapter history and serving as an information source for the Chapter’s members as well as the general public.”  It would also “enable the long-term goal of preservation of Chinese American librarianship in North America.”

Lisa received a master's degree in library and information science from University of Illinois, Urbana Champaign and a master's degree from University of Illinois, Chicago.  Li Fu received a master's degree in library and information science from Dominican University, Chicago and a master's degree from Dalian University of Technology and Science.

The grants was presented to the recipients on Sunday night, June 27, 2004, 7:00-10:00 p.m. at the CALA Awards Banquet during the 2004 ALA Annual Conference in Orlando.
