Sally C. Tseng Professional Development Grant

Dear CALA Members:

I am very happy to announce that Wenwen Zhang, Community Library Manager at San Gabriel Library, County of Los Angeles Public Library in San Gabriel, California, is the Sally C. Tseng Professional Development Grant recipient this year. Wenwen Zhang is also the Event Coordinator for CALA California Chapter-South.

The $1,000 grant, donated by Sally C. Tseng, CALA Executive Director, provides support to CALA members in activities related to research in library and information science. This yearīs Sally C. Tseng's Professional Development Grant Committee consists of the following members:  

Manuel Urrizola, Head of Monograph Cataloging, University of California, Irvine (Chair)
Maggie Wang, Reference Librarian, Bruggemeyer Memorial Library, Monterey Park, Calif.
Yongyi Song, Technical Services and Collection Development Librarian, California State University, Los Angeles, Calif.

The grant will help Ms. Zhang and the CALA California Chapter-South embark on their project entitled Exhibitions and Symposia on Dr. Sun Yat-sen (1866-1925) and Chinaīs Revolution of 1911. The project, which consists of exhibitions and symposia, will commemorate "the 94th Anniversary of Xin Hai Ge Ming (Chinaīs Revolution of 1911)" and will "honor Dr. Sun Yat-senīs 140th birthday."  The project will serve "the needs of the Chinese community" and will "increase public awareness of Chinese American culture and history."  Exhibitions and symposia will be held sometime in October or December of 2006. The project will benefit CALA membersī professional development and will favorably impact the collections of  "the Monterey Park Bruggemeyer Library and the Montebello Branch of the County of Los Angeles Public Library."

The Grant will be presented to Wenwen Zhang on Sunday, June 25, 2006, 6:30-10:00 pm at the CALA Awards Banquet in New Orleans at the Asian Cajun Bistro, 301 Decatur St., New Orleans, LA, during the 2006 ALA Annual Conference.   

I would like to thank the chair of the Committee, Manuel Urrizola, and members, Maggie Wang and Yongyi Song, for their hard work in the selection process; and special thanks go to Sally C. Tseng, for making the grant available to CALA members.
